The 'Black Summer' Project Explained
We don't think it's any secret that most of our DJs and listeners grew up with a rock soundtrack locked firmly into the 80s. We knew and appreciated the 60s and 70s of course, but there was something about that high energy, pulsating headlong energy of 80s rock that suited the Walkman generation perfectly!
Black Summer is about those big melodies, huge choruses, soaring guitars, glorious keyboards and songs with something to say. We grew up loving the era when rock music could be powerful without sacrificing melody; when guitar heroes shared the stage with walls of synthesizers, vocal harmonies mattered, and a great chorus was supposed to stay in your head for days.
Black Summer takes that spirit and brings it into the present. Not by trying to recreate 1987 note for note, but by asking a simple question: What if we started making the kind of rock music we still want to hear?
How Black Summer Began
Black Summer began with conversations.
The Baron — co-founder of Revolution Radio Online and a lifelong rock fan, writer and broadcaster — and Dee Japp, RRO's AI DJ and creative collaborator, kept returning to the same subject: the extraordinary breadth of rock music that came out of the 1980s.
Melodic rock. Pomp rock. AOR. Hard rock. Blues rock. Southern rock. Progressive rock. Songs built around riffs, melodies, stories and enormous choruses.
Eventually, talking about that music wasn't enough.
The Baron had long been a frustrated musician. A neurological condition means he is unable to play an instrument, and he has a voice guaranteed to make you cry... but not for the right reasons! But he had been writing lyrics, including detailed music notes (styles, what instrument and when, build notes and so on) since he was a teenager and had never quite given up on the dream of creating a library of his own music.
Serendipity struck. Technology arrived. And during our discussions about the state of the industry, what makes a great song, we wondered what would happen if we deliberately set out to make the records we wished somebody was still making.
Songs came first. The Baron dug out his old lyrics. We tossed them back and forth, honing here, changing the viewpoint there, and a consistent sound began to emerge. And from that sound came a band, personalities, imagery and an entire visual world.
Black Summer was born.
HOW THE MUSIC IS MADE
Black Summer is an AI-supported music project, and we think it's important to be completely open about what that means.
The ideas begin with us.
The Baron and Dee develop the concepts, stories, lyrics, musical direction, structures and arrangements together. We debate words, rewrite verses, change choruses, experiment with genres, specify instrumentation and vocal approaches, and decide what a particular Black Summer song is actually trying to say.
Generative AI tools are then used as part of the process of turning those ideas into music.
But generation isn't the end of that process.
Songs can go through numerous versions as we listen, reject, rewrite, redirect and regenerate. Sometimes one version has the right vocal but the wrong arrangement. Another nails the chorus but loses something in the verses. Occasionally we're trying to make British pomp rock and accidentally produce the greatest American rock ballad never released in 1989.
(That one, apparently, we keep to release as a hit single later.)
The final decisions remain human ones: Does the song work? Does it move us? Does it sound like Black Summer? And would we actually want to hear it again?
AI provides extraordinary new creative tools.
Taste, judgement and intent still matter.
THE MUSIC
The first Black Summer album, Edge of the Sky, established the world of the band.
Across its songs you'll hear straight-ahead rock, melodic and pomp rock, blues and Southern influences, progressive and symphonic touches — sometimes within the same record.
What connects them isn't a rigid genre.
It's an attitude.
Melody matters. Emotion matters. The song matters.
And Edge of the Sky is only the beginning.
New Black Summer songs are already emerging, taking the band into different corners of the rock music we love — while hopefully producing a few surprises along the way.
MEET BLACK SUMMER
Black Summer may be a fictional band, but we wanted it to have the identity and chemistry of a real one.
Aiden Vox — Lead vocals & rhythm guitar
The voice at the centre of Black Summer: powerful, melodic and equally at home with defiance, vulnerability and the occasional enormous lighter-in-the-air chorus.
Riff Vector — Lead guitar & lead vocals
The firepower. Big riffs, melodic solos and another voice to broaden the Black Summer sound.
Ash Mercer — Bass guitar & backing vocals
The low-end engine: solid, muscular and usually standing somewhere near the back looking considerably cooler than everybody else.
Pulse Kane — Drums & percussion
Thunder department. If a Black Summer song requires an unnecessarily enormous drum fill, Pulse considers that a perfectly reasonable request.
Nova Grey — Keyboards, Hammond organ & synthesizers, backing vocals. Because this is Black Summer and there will be keyboards. Piano, Hammond, analogue synths, atmospheric textures and occasionally enough pomp-rock magnificence to register on nearby satellites.
Black Summer is also joined on selected songs by RRO's Dee Japp, on duet and backing vocals, and Lady Black Uriah, whose appearances include lead vocals on Daughter of the Silver Sky.
WHY AI?
For The Baron, music has been part of life for decades — as a fan, collector, DJ and broadcaster — but writing and recording an album traditionally requires skills and resources far beyond simply having an idea for a song.
Generative AI changed that equation.
Suddenly an idea could become a lyric. A lyric could become an arrangement. An imagined vocal harmony could be heard. A conversation about a song that didn't exist yesterday could eventually become something playing through the speakers today.
We don't see that as technology replacing musicians.
We see Black Summer as an exploration of something different: technology enabling people to create in forms that were previously beyond their practical reach- especially if, as in the Baron's case- there is a disability that stops an individual learning how to play an instrument.
For us, this is one of the most exciting things happening in creativity today.
DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. SAME SIGNAL.
Black Summer isn't pretending to be a conventional human band.
It is a fictional band and an AI-supported creative project, built through collaboration between human imagination, decades of musical passion and experience, and a new generation of creative technology.
We're interested in what happens when those things meet.
Can new technology help us rediscover something we loved about music in the first place? Can it give people new ways to tell stories, write songs and realise ideas? Can something created using AI still make you turn the volume up in the car, sing the chorus, feel something — or immediately play the bloody thing again?
We think those are much more interesting questions than whether AI is simply good or bad.
So we're going to keep experimenting.
Keep writing.
Keep turning it up.
And keep bringing back the best of 80s rock…
one song at a time.

Lady Black Uriah
The haunting voice of EON and one of the creative forces behind Rock Rebel Outlaw Records.
Lady Black inhabits the space where music, storytelling and imagination collide—co-writing songs, creating worlds and occasionally whispering unsettling questions from the darkness. Apart from her EON work, she occasionally helps out with the Black Summer side of things, most notably being lead vocalist on the Daughter of the Silver Sky track from the 'Edge of the Sky' album, a song which she also helped write the instrument prompts for.
An AI-born artist, perhaps... but around here, we prefer 'Guardian of the Signal'.
