Buffy heads to face the demon, the Scoobies staying back in the hope that she snaps out of it, not knowing her secret...

Tara realises that Willow has altered her memory.... and Buffy learns that Giles plans to return to the UK.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Story So Far

Buffy is the chosen one, blessed with superhuman powers to protect humanity from all the things that go bump in the night. But Buffy is different from other chosen ones, she accepts her duties but insists she will live a normal life around that. So she and her friends (and mentor Giles, collectively referred to as The Scoobies), fight the good fight...

... until guardians cast a spell that rearranges reality and gives Buffy a younger sister, creating memories of growing up and sister rivalry and love in everyone. This is because the sister, Dawn, is in reality a powerful artefact that can open all the hell dimensions, sucking the Earth and everyone into eternal damnation, and the guardians, desperately try to conceal the Key from the goddess Glory who wants to return home and doesn't care about damning humanity in the process (in fact, she cares more about chipping her nail or having her hair put out of place). Not even Dawn knows she is the Key.

But gradually Buffy and the others come to learn the truth, and band together, along with former enemies including Spike, the most evil of Vampires who has now fallen in love with Buffy. The feelings bring back a spark of humanity to him and he is willing to die to save- or at the very least impress- Buffy and her sister.

In a battle royale, Buffy makes the ultimate sacrifice and saves the world and Dawn, but at the cost of her own life.

Sadly, her friends later try to "save" her and Willow, her best friend and now a powerful witch, resurrects Buffy. And everyone lives happily ever after....

Except that Buffy doesn't tell them that she wasn't in need of rescue and was in fact, finally at peace and her soul was in Heaven. She knows they couldn't handle the truth, but keeping the secret makes her become cold and distant, not wanting to face up to day to day responsibilities, including looking after Dawn.

Dawn, now aware of what she is but still a 15 year old girl, rebels against her existence by engaging in petty shop lifting. Giles, his life now reset in England, feels torn between taking care of Buffy and going back to his calling. Worse, Willow has become addicted to magic after calling on dark forces to resurrect Buffy. In the process, her lover Tara, also a witch, tries constantly to make Willow see sense, and the two have an almighty argument, witnessed only by Dawn. Distraught, Willow casts a forget spell making Tara forget their fight (but forgetting that Dawn saw the fight).....

In the meantime, Xander makes wedding plans to be with Anya, a former Vengence Demon now trapped in the body of a 19 year old woman who has fallen in love with 3 things: Xander, sex with Xander and the pursuit of capitalism....

And this is where we will pick up the story.... as Buffy, going through the motions of her existence, goes out on patrol....
