Take a classic glam rocker from Slade and turn it into a ballad!?! Are you freaking kidding me???
That would have been my reaction if that's what I had been told that was what Rebecca Downes was about to do.
The reality however, is very different. Right from the opening storm sound effect and opening, soft, gentle but haunting bars, you're hooked, drawn in to wonder how is this gonna sound.
And then that voice enters the mix and you are lost in a new world where the nuance of loss and haunting pain simply makes your heart ache. You forget that this was a glam rocker about non-conformity, and instead get taken on a journey into heartbreak and quiet defiance from someone feeling betrayed and almost broken. Almost, but not quite. There is a fire deep in the heart of this new narrator, a voice that is full of a new realisation: I don't want to drink my whisky like you do... I am an individual not defined by you, us, or what you have done to me. This new narrative is then punched home with some powerfully under-stated guitar work from Steve Birkett (easily one of the the best guitarists that hasn't been given the recognition due by those outside of the Rebecca fan club).
Like I said, hauntingly beautiful.
The single is released on Friday 15th May on all the usual platforms. PLEASE GO BUY IT OR ADD TO YOUR PLAYLISTS (if a Spotify user).
As for me, I'm off to play it again.
