Lee Aaron's eagerly awaited new album is finally here. And with a bevy of metal, rock, jazz and blues albums under her belt, Radio On! sees the Canadian vocalist return to the "Body Rock" era of her sound. The result is a fun, sparkling album, that entertains with occasional surprises and consummate performances. Certainly, it is a much more consistent album than Body Rock, and in the title track "Radio On!", gives DJs everywhere an anthem to open shows and generally share the love of radio with our listeners.
Lee's voice is as powerful as ever, full of dynamic range and playfulness: a velvet glove one moment, a fist the next, and you can sense the fun and energy which the band approached the project, and songs like 'Russian Doll' and 'C'mon' typify this. There are also some deeply personal and introspective lyrics from Aaron- 'Mama Don't Remember' looks back at the T&A era her label shoe-horned her into (always against her will) for example, and 'Wasted' will shock you.
All in all, a really good commercial rock album from an artist who is enjoying life. It's an album that will make you smile and nod along as you drive in the sun, and there's nothing wrong with that. So why am I slightly disappointed? Simply put, I would prefer a return to her more metal side, the Metal Queen/Call of the Wild era. Lee's voice is a panzer tank. On this album, it's been painted pink. But that's just my personal preference.
And yes, I have already played songs from it on my show, and will continue to do so. I guess at the end of the day, there can be no better recommendation.
