SONGS FULL OF ENERGY, ANGER AND PASSION FROM AN ARTIST WHO HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL WHO UNDERSTANDS ABOUT PAIN.
Okay, let's be straight about this from the start. This is not a rock or metal album. But it's not fair to dismiss this as a "pop" album either. True, it has its proportion of jaunty beats but even the ballads have a guitar edge under the mix, and when Jennah opens that voice of hers up it soars from the deepest depths of Hell to the gorgeous heights of Heaven. This is a lady who has quite literally been to Hell, survived it, and used the pain to create some glorious, often angry, but always clear and passionately stated tunes.
Regular listeners to my show, The Baron's Rock Show, will know of Jennah through the pop-rock song I play often, 'Burn'. That song is probably the most overtly pop-rock song on the album. Think Anastacia "Left Outside Alone" era and you'll know what I mean. That is not to say Jennah sounds like Anastacia. She doesn't at all. She sounds like Jennah. Her sound, her voice, is all her own. And, to go back to 'Burn' for a moment, my listeners absolutely love it. It is played along side the likes of Judas Priest and Whitesnake and Deep Purple, and my listeners love it. Full of vitriolic and vengeful words, sung with a suitable edge in the voice, it grabs you from the start, and when Jennah hits the chorus and really opens up, the chills hit you hard. What's it about? Well, during many of the shows on the station, we have a range of #InspiredBy pics that we post for various songs, and this is the one I use for Burn:
Words, music and voice all combine to match the subject theme. None of this "I am singing words that say how much my heart is broken, but my music track is a fun and bouncy beat" crap. The guitar cut through and edgy voice truly hit home. Trust me, listen to it and you'll see why this gif is perfect.
The song on the album that follows 'Burn' is 'Hold On Tight', a deeply personal track about a dear friend who passed away. Again, the music, words and voice are a perfect mix and the guitar solo short, but reaching for just the right expansive notes to convey the sense of loss. Trust me once more, you will need a hankie for this one.
Even the more poppy sounding tracks like YOLO and Firing Line have a distinctive edge to them, and there are no tracks on this album that I don't like. That's something I can rarely say. What's even more remarkable is that Jennah's voice is just as awesome live. During lockdown, she gave weekly live performances from her living room, and she can sing ANYTHING. But don't go thinking she's a cover artist- her song-writing capabilities are a more than a match for any top song writer out there.
We'll be playing 3 tracks from the album on our "Poptastic" special Supplement show on Saturday 23rd April from 7pm, but please don't wait until then, just go buy the album now. It is a genre-defying masterwork full of verve and brilliance and deeply personal experiences. Jennah is not a pop singer. She is a true musician, with the voice, to paraphrase Jim Steinman, "of a horny angel".
