THE FIRST LADY OF THE REVOLUTION CONFIRMS HER ROCK CHICK CREDENTIALS!
We've been eagerly awaiting the new single and wondering how Rebecca would follow on from the awesome "More Sinner Than Saint" album of a couple of years ago. Well, pandemic lockdowns and the "Stripped Back" album in the meantime, the signs are that the new album is going to continue in the same vein as Sinner. Which as far as we are concerned, is a good thing, because if the new single, 'Hold On' is any indication, Ms Downes and her song-writing partner in crime (the woefully neglected guitarist Steve Birkett- more on this later), we're in for a real treat when the album finally arrives.
As for the single itself, Rebecca and the boys have delivered a mean and dirty riff rocker with a blues motif running subtly under it. Rebecca's vocals shine clear and sharp, delivered with the energy and passion of someone who knows she has a great voice and isn't afraid to push it up a level when needed. The riff, as we said, is mean and dirty, driving the song forward with some urgency, with some nice flourishes on end riffs that add to the song without detracting from it (take note Yngwie Malmsteen!).
We've said that Steve Birkett is woefully neglected, and by that we mean by the wider rock media and fraternity. Of course, Rebecca fans know different. Steve's guitar work is superb and he proves that once again by delivering a guitar solo that, whilst perfect for the structure of the song, is full of energy and sprinkled with just enough pyrotechnic note picking to satisfy all air guitar users throughout the land.
Equally ignored, is the power of this song-writing duo of Downes & Birkett, who are clearly at the top of their game. Bring on the new album! In the meantime, the single is a fabulous place to gleefully wait until the album arrives. Go get it now!
