The most under rated female vocalist has got to be Hayley Williams of Paramore, she is clearly in the same league as Amy Lee but never seems to get the correct recognition for her vocal talent.
In my opinion one of the most under rated male vocalists is Marc Storace of Krokus, he was overlooked when AC/DC turfed out Brian Johnson yet i think he would have been a perfect replacement for Brian.
As the Baron has said, Lou Gramm has been a very under-rated vocalist The power that man has in his voice! Just fantastic!
Brent Smith, from Shinedown doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He has a lot of power and has great control of his voice. Listening to their version of Simple Man on headphones for the first time blew me away.
Another favourite of mine is Bruce Dickinson. Many people just say he shouts and doesn’t sing but the range he has is incredible.
For the Blues, I have to put BB King and Etta James at the top of the list for male and female vocalists. From an under-rated point of view, just listen to Tony (TS) McPhee and his strident vocals on Muddy Waters' track Still a Fool or Jo Harman singing I Shall Not Be Moved - awesome songs and awesome vocals.
Female wise Lee Aaron is one of the most under-rated vocalists. Cursed by bad management in her early career (yeah Lee, be all T&A, don't worry about the music), her albums never got the attention they deserved. If you don't believe me re her voice, check out Barely Holding On from her 3rd album, Call of the Wild.
I think that Mike Howe from Metal Church is a very under - rated singer, he has a very powerful voice that most non thrash metal fans have heard.
Another singer who I think is under - rated is Deen Castronova from Journey / Revolution Saints, a voice that has a great vocal range as proven by his performance on Turn Back Time by Revolution Saints.
For me, the "most ignored because he is so good everyone just assumes he's a favourite" male vocalist has to be Lou Gramm of Foreigner fame. His vocals on those first 20 years of albums (and his solo works) are nothing short of sublime. On top that he was an excellent front man all round.... "I want to hear you... we've got the amps, you've got the numbers!"
